Jewish Students Flock to a Lutheran College
Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania has recently become a popular destination for Jewish students. According to Hillel International, Muhlenberg ranks 5th in the nation in terms of the percentage of its students that is Jewish. Muhlenberg provides a welcoming environment for Jewish students with an active Hillel Center and an Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding founded in 1989.
The irony, however, is that Muhlenberg is a Lutheran College affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Martin Luther was a notorious anti-Semite who later became a hero and spiritual mentor to the Nazis.
To compound the irony, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, for whom Muhlenberg College is named, was also an ardent anti-Semite, who lobbied strongly to have restrictions placed on Jews written into the Pennsylvania constitution.
